Born in 1972, Moscow, USSR

Resides and works in Jyväskylä, Finland

Vera Zvereva works with mixed media, combining drawing, recycled paper sculpture, and porcelain painting with digital collage techniques.

She draws on cultural history, particularly medieval and Renaissance imagery, as well as modern scientific illustration, to tell stories about contemporary visions and dreams. The diaspora experience and contemporary history are, like dark matter, ever-present in their absence. Embracing carnivalesque reversals of binaries - high and low, serious and unserious, grandeur and modesty, nature and culture - her work advances posthumanism by evoking utopian, non-violent worlds. These are places of roleplaying and shapeshifting humans, animals, forest spirits, and robots. She often works in series.
